Teacher's Directions
Preparation:
Set up 8 stations in your classroom. Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Each group will rotate from station to station and prepare written responses for each of the designated tasks. Prepare each station by writing each task onto a 4" x 6" index card.
Station #1 task:
Which of the following areas consumed the most energy in Iowa in the year 1990? Explain why.
Agriculture, transportation, house, industrial building.
Station #2 task:
Explain what these two items have in common:
Materials: a fern and a piece of coal
Station #3 task:
Name two types of fossil fuel in addition to coal and explain how they were formed.
Materials: model of a gas can and picture of a gas stove or water heater and dryer.
Station #4 task:
Give two characteristics of bituminous coal.
Materials: A sample of bituminous coal.
Station #5 task:
At which hole would you expect to find the greatest source of pressure and explain your answer.
Materials: A milk carton with holes labeled A, B, and C starting at 8 cm from the bottom and going up every 4 cm.
Station #6 task:
Explain the use of a turbine to make electricity. What types of fuel are used by generating plants in Iowa?
Materials: A picture or model of a turbine.
Station #7 task:
Choose a year from 1900 - 1950. Write a paragraph describing what life was like in this year, including forms of transportation, entertainment, heating, communication, cooking, etc. You may use your Lifestyles and Energy Survey Chart.
