Department Facilities
The Department of Earth Sciences is located on the first floor of Latham
Hall, which is shown above. The sculpture shown in the front is made up
of reproductions of enlarged ragweed pollen grains, and slabs of Anamosa
limestone. Within the limestone blocks are inlays showing the postion of
the stars of the Big Dipper over various epochs of time.
The main office of the Department of Earth Sciences is located in 121
Latham. Here is the place to go for helpful information and to leave messages
for staff and faculty.
The student computer room in Latham hall provides students with access
to a wide variety of computing resources. Programs that are designed specifically
for Geology, Astronomy, Meteorology and Science Education are available.
Other computer resources include WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, WWW browsers,
statistical packages, plotting programs, laser printer, color laser printer and scanner.
The computers are dual-boot in Linux and Win NT to provide students
with access to discipline specific software packages, including real time
weather data..
Students have the opportunity to relax or study in the Earth Science Student
Lounge.
