Geological Facilities
Laboratory investigations, field trips and undergraduate research are integral
parts of the geology and earth science programs at the University of Northern
Iowa.
 |
Physical Geology labs, like all labs in the Earth Science Department,
are taught by the same professor that teaches the lecture portion of the
course. Here Dr. Jim Walters is shown assisting students in a lab dealing
with the physical properties of minerals. |
| Physical Geology students work on physical properties of minerals in
the Geology labs. |
 |
| The optical mineralogy class is hard at work. |
 |
 |
Undergraduate Geology major Jennifer Weber is examining a suite of
volcanic rocks obtained from Mt. Etna in Sicily. Students in the Geochemistry
courses are able to analysis rock specimens in detail using the available
equipment. |
 |
Katie Schafer, Geology major, is mounting the camera on to the x-ray
machine to identify an unknown mineral in a Determinative Mineralogy laboratory
assignment. |
| Aaron Lytle, Geology major with an Environmental Science emphasis,
examines a map from among the thousands housed in the Department of Earth
Science Map collection. |
 |
 |
Aaron Lytle, Geology major with an Environmental Science emphasis,
determines the size-grade distribution of flood deposits from the Cedar
River. |
