Research Activities in the Department of Earth Science

Students in the Earth Sciences have conducted undergraduate student researchat UNI since at least 1969.  Most students carrying out research projectsare Geology B.S. majors, since undergraduate research is a requirementon that degree.  However, undergraduate research is open to all interestedand qualified Earth Science students.  Students have worked with facultyin Astronomy, Geology, Meteorology, and Earth Science Education; occasionallyinterdisciplinary research projects are undertaken.  Research activities often lead to presentations at professional society meetings and/or publicationin refereed journals.

Geology BS Major Jesse Koch is congratulated by Sigma Gamma EpsilonNational President, Dr. Donald Neal, after winning theNational Council Award for best undergraduate research paper at the Geological Society of America's Annual Meeting, November, 2004

The undergraduate research experience is important preparation for graduateschool as well as an exercise in developing creative thinking and problemsolving skills, beneficial traits in future employment.   Studentshave an opportunity to share in the excitement of discovery, learn howto formulate significant questions, collect and interpret data, and evaluateand present the results of their research.

If you are interested in conducting undergraduate research, a good placeto start is to talk with professors in the Earth Science Department aboutideas for possible research projects.
